FDA considering dosage instructions for children’s drug

Federal health officials (FDA) are considering adding dosing instructions for children younger than 2 years old to Children’s Tylenol and similar products, a change favored by drugmakers and many doctors.

It is being said that the FDA will be meeting next week to talk about changing the formula for acetaminophen, one of the big ingredients that found in children’s medication.

Another topic that will be discussed during the meeting is changing the labeling for liquid children’s medications such as Children’s Tylenol and Triaminic. As of now, these medications do not have anything on their labels that show dosage information for children 2 and under and what do in case of an emergency.

The FDA is stating that they will be talking with an outside source and panel as to whether the labels should be changed.

Amid growing reports of serious health complications, federal authorities have ordered manufacturers of a type of artificial hip to conduct follow-up safety studies of the devices. The Food and Drug Administration has ordered all producers of a popular category of artificial hip to undertake studies of the implants, which have been linked to high early failure rates and severe health effects in some patients.

Metal-on-metal hips, which are made from metals like cobalt and chromium, accounted until relatively recently for about one-third of the estimated 250,000 hip replacement procedures preformed annually in the United States.

But over the past two years, the use of the implants has fallen off in part amid reports that they are prone to early failure and that some patients have developed serious health problems related to particles of metallic debris.

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi (half) replacement. Such joint replacement orthopaedic surgery generally is conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage as part of hip fracture treatment. A total hip replacement (total hip arthroplasty) consists of replacing both the acetabulum and the femoral head while hemiarthroplasty generally only replaces the femoral head. Hip replacement is currently the most successful and reliable orthopaedic operation[citation needed] with 97% of patients reporting improved outcome.

Researchers comparing pancreatic cancer treatments found notable differences in patient survival rates and quality of life. For the first time in years, doctors are making progress against pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest of all tumors, which kills all but 6% of patients.

A cocktail of four chemotherapy drugs improves average survival by more than 60% in people with pancreatic cancer, French researchers reported Wednesday. The drugs had a variety of side effects, but did not impair the quality of life for the survivors. Because survival is so poor with the disease, many patients are happy to accept the side effects of the drug to gain a few months of life.

But study author Thierry Conroy notes that pancreatic cancer is especially lethal, typically killing patients in only about 6 months. Patients diagnosed with the disease have so few options that the Food and Drug Administration approved a drug called Tarceva to treat pancreatic cancer in 2005, even though that drug improved survival by only about 2 weeks.

Investigators concluded that although the FOLFIRINOX did improve survival rates over gemcitabine, the toxicity of the drug combination caused numerous negative side effects. Therefore investigators recommended that only patients who are younger than 76 years old, and who do not suffer from other health problems use FOLFIRINOX.

Chocolate milk over added sugar ban in school

Chocolate milk, with all of its added sugar, has become a new target for people concerned with childhood obesity in Los Angeles. Most of the milk consumed in schools is chocolate milk.

As concern grows about child obesity, more people are asking why sugary flavored milk remains a staple of school lunches across the country.

Flavored milk makes up about 70 percent of milk consumed in schools. Most of that milk is chocolate.

Los Angeles schools Superintendent John Deasy is the latest official to push to remove flavored milk from school menus. He’s supported by many parents and even British TV chef Jamie Oliver. Oliver has made revamping school food one of his signature causes.

We need to stop worrying that our kids are going to starve if we don’t offer them junk to eat and drink. Just like they’re programmed to nag us for more and more sugary treats, they’re programmed to survive. They’ll be fine without chocolate milk.

FDA Approves Everolimus for Rare Type of Pancreatic Cancer

Novartis AG’s cancer drug Afinitor has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a rare type of pancreatic cancer that has few treatment options.

Neuroendocrine tumors found in the pancreas are slow-growing and rare. The FDA says fewer than 1,000 new cases are reported in the U.S. each year.

In clinical studies, patients given Afinitor had no progression of their tumors for a median of 11 months, while those on placebo had no progression only for 4.6 months. The drug appeared to benefit even people who had no success with other treatments.

“Patients with this cancer have few effective treatment options,” says Richard Pazdur, MD, of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in a news release. “Afinitor has demonstrated the ability to slow the growth and spread of neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas.”

The agency announced on Thursday that the FDA has approved J&J unit’s Zytiga, a pill that targets a protein called cytochrome, to treat late-stage of prostate cancer in patients, who have received prior chemotherapy. Protein cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1), which has been made by Centocor Ortho Biotech, plays significant role in the testosterone production.

What Zytiga Does

Zytiga (abiraterone acetate) targets a protein called CYP17A1, which the FDA says plays a key role in the production of testosterone.

The agency says the drug works by decreasing the production of testosterone that stimulates cancer cells to keep growing.

The application for approval of the pill, made by the Johnson & Johnson unit Centocor Ortho Biotech, was considered under the FDA’s priority review process. The FDA says that process provides for an expedited six-month review for drugs that are believed to offer major advances in treatment or which provide a treatment when no adequate therapy exists.

In a study, 1,195 patients with advanced prostate cancer patients who received abiraterone, along with the steroid prednisone, lived a median of 3.9 months longer than those treated with prednisone alone, according to company-sponsored findings presented Oct. 11 at the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in Milan.
