Dermatosis (plural dermatoses), a noun, is defined as “any disease of the skin,” and, while thousands of skin disorders have been described, only a small number account for most visits to the doctor. Uncommon presentations of common diseases are common.
The skin diseases are common in the whole world. In the countries in the process of development, the infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy and the onchocercose are common, while in the developed countries, inflammatory disorders such as eczema and the acne are common. Disorders of skin can be inherited, for example the syndrome of Ehlers-Danlos, a part of normal development, for example vulgaris of acne, or can present as an element of a systemic disorder, for example the systemic erythematosus of lupus (SLE).
As is true of many of the diseases on the medical spectrum, skin diseases reference a wide array of conditions which affect the skin. Diseases affecting the skin can be caused by complications of other medical conditions, fungal infections, bacterial infections, allergic reactions, and even insect bites. The skin is affected by both internal and external conditions and factors. The skin is exposed to a range of environmental hazards making it vulnerable to all manner of threats. Genetic predispositions to certain conditions are also attributed to the emergence of certain skin diseases. Even the occurrence of one type of skin disease can lead to the appearance of another.
Skin diseases usually fall into a specific category or type. The most common types of skin diseases include inflammatory disorders, viral, bacterial, cancerous, and fungal. The skin diseases associated with a certain type will usually exhibit similar symptoms, be caused by similar sources, and is treated and/or cured in a similar manner. Of course each skin disease will exhibit variances in the symptoms and severity and may display some unique characteristics. Skin diseases can range from barely noticeable to disfiguring, even to life threatening. But the type of skin disease will help determine the probable cause and the best course of proven treatment to follow.

Eczema – Eczema, or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is an inflammatory skin disorder. The severity of this disease can vary. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot, and itchy. In the more severe cases, the skin can become broken, raw, and bleeding. It is not contagious, but can become very unsightly. Eczema can affect any part of the body. In infants, eczema typically occurs on the forehead, cheeks, forearms, legs, scalp, and neck. In children and adults, eczema typically occurs on the face, neck, and the insides of the elbows, knees, and ankles. Please visit our eczema section for more information, and for treatment options.
Psoriasis -Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory disorder of the skin. It is not contagious. It is the result of an abnormally rapid multiplication of the cells of the epidermal layer of the skin. It can affect any area of the body, but is most commonly found on the scalp, elbows, knees, hands, feet, and genitals. More than 4.5 million adults in the United States have it. Please visit our psoriasis section to identify skin problems related to psoriasis.
Rosacea – Rosacea is clinically defined as a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling, primarily on the face and chest. It also appears on the scalp, neck, ears, and back. Sometimes rosacea affects the eyes. Rosacea usually varies in severity, and manifests in episodes of flushing and inflammation of the affected areas. The skin lesions, which can accompany rosacea (acne rosacea), differ from acne in that spots of inflammation do not swell with fluid and come to a “head” like acne vulgaris pustules do.
If the condition is left untreated visible blood vessels may appear and the skin will become redder. Eventually, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue. The eyes are also affected in many rosacea patients. The eyes feel irritated and appear watery or bloodshot. Please visit our rosacea section to help identify skin problems related to rosacea.
