Obese teens almost always are Vitamin D deficient

A recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) found that while black and white children with vitamin D deficiency both had higher fat levels, black children were more likely to have higher levels of fat just under their skin and white children were more likely to have higher levels of fat between their internal organs. Infants with low vitamin D have infection risk

In the new study published online Monday in Pediatrics, researchers in the Netherlands assessed vitamin D levels in 156 babies at birth by measuring concentrations in their cord blood. After one year, 18 babies had developed a lower respiratory tract infection caused by a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). These babies, researchers found, were more likely to have had lower levels of vitamin D.
