As reported in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the campaign, unveiled last Wednesday, includes two posters of a baby lying inside a bed following to a large knife. In one, the baby is white; in the other, the baby is black. “YOUR BABY SLEEPING NEXT TO YOU CAN BE JUST AS DANGEROUS,” the copy blares.

The second-leading cause of infant mortality in Milwaukee is SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, which usually final results from ”unsafe sleep,” according to the health department’s website. A type of “unsafe sleep” is bed-sharing with parents.

Opinion from reader:

1. I’m from the Milwaukee area, the problem is these girls that are drinking or getting high, then coming home and going to bed with their babies. They lose that natural awareness most cosleeping mothers have at that point. The same goes for anyone that takes pain meds or sleep meds. I coslept with both my babies and if they breathed wrong for a half second I was awake. People need to learn to do it the right way and the mothers who are under the influence while cosleeping should get charged in their baby’s death.

2. I am so angry. The campaign is a bunch of lies. Co-sleeping lowers SIDs risks in infants when done properly. A baby’s breathing will become in sinc with moms and lowers chance of them not breathing properly. If you want to lower deaths teach proper ways to co-sleep. No pillow tops, no smoking,no drinking before bed, no meds that make you sleepy, no blankets over baby, and no drugs. A poster above said about rolling over on the baby. I have never rolled over on my kids. I co-slept 5 children and never an accident. I slept curled around my kids holding them. If the mortality rate is so high then they need to look and see if some of thos parents were not drunk or stoned.

A baby’s crib is often one of the few places where parents can place their child and feel OK leaving the baby unattended. It’s the focal point of most nurseries, a must-have item on many baby registries. Yet an average of 26 children suffer a crib-related injury every day, according to a new study in the journal Pediatrics.

An average of 113 children die each year from these accidents, according to the study, published in Pediatrics.

The true number of crib-related injuries and deaths is probably much higher, because the study included only children treated in ERs and not those seen at doctor’s offices or urgent-care centers, says author Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

The commission also plans to issue new safety standards for toddler beds and bassinets this year, and to consider new standards for play yards, chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum said in a statement.

A lot of this could be avoided. Once you have selected the best baby crib for you new baby, there are several issues to be aware of that will help you to use your new baby crib safely over time. This article reviews the important safety issues involved in safely using your new baby crib.

The most common symptom of alopecia areta in children is hair loss. In most cases, hair falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter. Although most children with alopecia areata get only a few bare patches, some children may lose more hair. Although uncommon, alopecia areata in children can progress to complete loss of hair on the head (alopecia areata totalis) or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body (alopecia areata universalis).
Babies who are having this kind of disorder will gradually become hairless. However, there is still a chance to help your baby recover from losing hairs.
Babies rarely experience such disorder though. But it can happen. If you noticed your baby is showing some indications of the Alopecia Areata disorder, you should take him to the doctor immediately for further examinations.
Treatment for Alopecia Areata in Children
There is no cure for alopecia areata in children and there are no medications that are approved for alopecia areata treatment. However, doctors may prescribe medications that are approved for other diseases to help hair grow back. Treatments options for alopecia areata in children usually involve an ointment or cream (topical medicine). The topical medicines most often used for alopecia in children include: corticosteroids and minoxidil.
Due to the fact that there is actually no definite cause of such disorder, it then follows the unavailability of precise cure. Parents are then recommended to take the baby to his doctor for further advice.

A natural eczema treatment is to supplement your body with nutrient rich foods. Between improving your diet by eating more fresh organically grown fruits and vegetables and the supplements I will discuss in these pages, you have an unbeatable diet and supplement program to help treat your eczema and bring back the kind of beautiful, soft skin that you have always dreamed of. I did it and you can do it too.

According to the National Library of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic, natural treatments for children’s eczema include careful hygiene and the use of certain ingredients on the skin.
Bathing
Children with eczema may benefit from a brief daily bath in warm water with a minimal amount of soap. This can reduce the loss of moisture in the skin that results in itching and irritations.
Pastes
You can prepare a paste of finely ground oatmeal or baking soda mixed with water and apply it to the area of your child’s skin affected by eczema to reduce itching, swelling and redness.
Oils
Using natural oils found in your kitchen, such as olive oil or tea tree oil, as a skin moisturizer for your child can help soothe dry and itchy skin, especially when applied after a bath.
Ointments
Ointments such as aloe vera extract or a rinse with lukewarm chamomile tea can be applied to your child’s skin to soothe itching and irritations caused by eczema.
Cotton
Dressing your child in cotton clothing rather than synthetic fibers or allergens such as wool can help draw sweat away from the skin and reduces skin irritations, especially in hot or humid weather.
Nutrition
Breastfeeding your infant or toddler can reduce the symptoms of eczema, and pumped breast milk can be applied directly to the skin to reduce itching and swelling; avoiding foods such as dairy and soy may also reduce itching and irritations caused by eczema.

Nutritional Medicine
The Nutritional Medicine approach includes principles that are of great benefit to the treatment of eczema. These principles support the following:
better digestion and assimilation of foods through the use of probiotics and enzymes;
better nutrition through nutrient rich food supplements and;
increased protection against free radical damage (oxidative stress) through whole food antioxidants.

My baby has eczema please help those of you with experience?
I need suggestions from those of you who have had babies with eczema its driving my baby crazy.

Baby Eczema Remedies
Baby eczema remedies include dressing the baby in 100% cotton clothing, bathing the child in lukewarm water, and applying a topical ointment or cream. Eczema seems to run in families and is often accompanied with asthma and hay fever. To identify any potential allergens that may cause a breakout a parent may want to consult with a physician and ask about tests that can be run to narrow down sensitivities. Allergens can be the result of both internal and external sources such as food or animal dander. A parent may be able to figure out what is causing a child’s dermatitis by observing his or her behavior. A good treatment for baby eczema is eliminating the foods or other sources that trigger scratching and inflammation. When an infant is suffering it can be very troubling for a parent. Remember to pray and trust God for the answer. “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” (Psalm 27:14)

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, can be a result of very dry skin. Using a lotion is not the best treatment for baby eczema but instead choose a cream or ointment that can be applied right after the infants bath while the skin is still damp. Stay away from wool and synthetic fabrics and don’t overdress a child because excessive heat can lead to breakouts. The best fabrics are the ones that breathe and are made from natural fibers like cotton. When purchasing clothes, blankets, and other things made with fabrics choose soft cottons. Always wash new clothing in a mild detergent that doesn’t include perfumes, dyes, and chlorine before putting them on the infant.

Allergens are often the cause of breakouts in children. To identify allergens a parent should observe the child’s behavior. Children will often scratch more and act cranky after exposure to an allergen. Food allergies may be the problem especially in a young infant. Some of the common culprits include but are not limited to peanuts, dairy products, corn, wheat, and acidic foods. Other common allergens include pollen, mold, mildew, dust, animal dander, cigarette smoke, and harsh detergents. Baby eczema remedies will often include antihistamines to counter the effect of allergens. Antihistamines are sold over-the-counter or can be prescribed by a physician. The ones that are prescribed are often more effective than over-the-counter brands.

Allergy tests can reveal sensitivities to common culprits but many doctors prefer to wait until a child is at least 5 years old before prescribing a treatment for baby eczema that involves immunotherapy shots. Allergy shots will eventually decrease sensitivity to an allergen. The way it works is the patient is given small doses of the allergen to gradually get the body to start building up immunity. After this happens, the patient is given larger doses until the maximum amount is reached and then the dosage is reduced until the therapy is finished. Doctors recommend several years of therapy for optimal results.

Eczema is not a contagious skin disorder and children who suffer with it often experience remission by age 5, though they may still have mild outbreaks throughout a lifetime. To take care of those periodic outbreaks a topical steroid cream may be used as a treatment for baby eczema and for periodic outbreaks later in life; however, using excessive amounts of steroids can cause some serious side effects. Not only can steroids cause thinning of the skin and bruising, there is also a chance of growth suppression in children. Less potent steroid creams can be purchased over-the-counter at the drug store or supermarket. Cortisone creams over-the-counter will usually provide some relief from the itching but it is unlikely that they will actually work well enough to completely heal the rash. The stronger steroid creams will often clear up a rash within a few days but the dermatitis may come back when the patient is exposed to an allergen.

Some parents feel uncomfortable using steroid creams on their infant’s skin. Natural baby eczema remedies can provide some relief from the itching and discomfort associated with dermatitis. Look for products that contain almond oil, calendula oil, evening primrose oil, vitamin E oil, aloe vera, cocoa butter, oatmeal, and other natural ingredients. Avoid products that contain artificial additives, mineral oil, perfume, alcohol, and lanolin. Alcohol will dry out the skin and actually cause irritation, making a rash worse.

Some doctors believe that starting an infant on solid foods too quickly can cause allergic reactions to foods and can result in eczema. The recommended age for introducing solid foods is 6 months and should begin with cereal. Introducing one new food at a time will give parents an opportunity to observe the child’s reaction. When parents give an infant several new foods at one time they won’t know which one is causing the allergy or rash.

Atopic dermatitis can become inflamed and infected when an infant continuously scratches. Signs of infection may include fussiness, fever, increased inflammation, redness, and blisters. When this happens the infant should be taken to the doctor for an evaluation and antibiotics may need to be prescribed. A preventive recommendation for baby eczema remedies includes keeping the child’s fingernails cut short making it harder to scratch the affected area. Additional preventative treatments are non-steroid creams and ointments. These can be obtained with a prescription from a physician and can be used twofold, to prevent a breakout and to treat a breakout.

My daughter seems to develop a diaper rash right out of the tub. Her bottom is fine before the bath, but once she’s out, her bottom looks raw in some areas. I’ve used two different baby body washes… and I make sure I don’t wash too roughly, and the water is not too warm… what is causing this?
1. Aveeno for Babies is really nice stuff, especially if baby has dry skin. If baby has cradle cap (dry scalp), you can use baby oil and a soft brush to gently remove dry skin from the head. Johnson & Johnson Naturals is good, as well, for bathtime and to keep baby’s skin moisturized. You don’t need to wash baby’s hair every day. Once or twice a week is enough, since they don’t really get dirty. Bathtimes nightly can help with setting a schedule/routine. Give baby a bath right before bed, especially with lavender-scented baby wash, and it’ll help them sleep a little better.

2. To prevent diaper rash, make sure you change baby’s diaper consistently. Their skin is really delicated, and just being in a soaked diaper for 10 minutes can turn the skin red. Balmex has a creamy ointment that works well, or you can go to a CVS/Pharmacy and pick up Paladin. I have a lot of customers that buy it, and swear by it! Hubby says A&D ointment works well, too.

3. Since the FDA removed all cold medications for infants/toddlers from the market, all you can really do is use a humidifier or vaporizer; make sure baby’s nose is suctioned out. Any nurse or doctor will tell you the same thing. If the mucous from the nose is turning green, get baby to doctor ASAP! Could be a sign of an infection.

Hope this information helps!

I bathed my babies everyday with the Johnsons baby wash, I used it as shampoo too and I lotioned them every day with baby magic, Love the baby smell. As far as diaper rashes, change often and clean bottom well. a little powder will help. Creams used to make my son get a rash and the only thing that helped him were the pampers rash care wipes and powder.

For a cold, try a humidifier but definatly consult the Dr. befor ANY medications are given, they also have the vaporizer baby bath, you can try that as well.
