Vehicle insurance

What is a vehicle insurance?
Vehicle insurance (also known as auto insurance, car insurance, or motor insurance) is insurance purchased for cars, trucks, and other road vehicles. Its primary use is to provide protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise therefrom.

Expanded Definition

Most states require a minimum amount of insurance to license a vehicle. That minimum usually relates to medical and liability coverage.

Collision coverage repairs your car in an accident regardless of fault. Comprehensive pays for damage by hail or a variety of indicental hazards (such as an auto deer collision). These coverages are optional, but most have them on newer vehicles. Older cars often have little value and may not be worth the cost of the extra coverage.

Many carry uninsured motorist insurance. Road hazard/towing insurance is often available at minimal cost. Options will provide a rental car while your car is being repaired.

A variety of discounts are offered. Multiple vehicles, multiple policies, safe driver, drivers’ education, good student, and theft prevention are common. Insurance rates vary with the area where you live, the mileage you drive, if driven to work or for pleasure, and increase if you have a young driver.

What Does Car Insurance Cover?

To begin with, it is best to understand, in general, what your car insurance covers. Not all policies are the same and you can purchase minimal auto insurance or extensive auto insurance. A car insurance policy is designed to provide coverage for:

* You
* Your vehicle(s)
* Third parties
* Property of third parties

Types of Coverage

There are several types of car insurance coverage. Coverage that pays for damages that you do to third parties and their property will be covered under a liability insurance policy. Damage to your vehicle because of a car accident/collision will be covered under a collision policy. Damage to your vehicle for other reasons, such as theft or fire, will be covered under a comprehensive policy.

A comprehensive policy may also provide payments to you for medical bills if you are injured in an accident. This can be called medical payments coverage and may need to be added to the policy. In some states, you may be required to purchase a specific level of personal injury protection insurance.

Determining Rates

Your car insurance rates will be determined based upon a variety of variables. Each auto insurance company will rate these variables a bit differently, so you should not expect the same car insurance rates from one company to another. Here is a short list of the major factors that contribute to your car insurance rates.

* Driving record
* Vehicle insured
* Location
* Age
* Driving habits
* Gender
* Marital status

Car Insurance Companies

You are probably already aware that not all insurance companies are the same. What may be a better car insurance provider for one person may not be the best for you. That is why it makes good sense to research specific car insurance companies in your area to make your choice. The nationwide companies are much easier to research than regional or local companies because there is more information available on them.

Shopping for Auto Insurance

Shopping for car insurance is a must if you want to get the best rate from the best company on the policy that fits your needs. Shopping consists of many of the steps mentioned above. Determine the policy you need, find several companies that seem like a good fit, and then compare rates. You can compare car insurance rates quickly by getting online rate quotes.
